Melissa Etheridge wrote a cool piece about the marriage ban. (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-11-06/you-can-forget...) That makes complete sense! (No, I'm not being sarcastic here.) If gays aren't treated like full citizens, why should they pay taxes like full citizens? Why should they be obligated to do ANYTHING like full citizens?
Women still overcome this problem today. "Do the same or more work as men, but get paid less." A lotta good that did- millions of women railed against this. Unfortunately, this problem continues today.
But here was a legislative measure that sought to CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION. Suddenly, supporters of Prop H8 who said that changing the Constitution is wrong, are ignoring the part of the Constitution that says that all men are equal. Now they'll have to change it to say, "All men are equal unless you're homosexual (but you'll still do your citizenry duty like everybody else)."
This is NOT FAIR.
A female announcer on KCBS yesterday evening called Prop 8 "a success". How can you call something a success when it is CLEARLY a failure of a modern society? Oh, sure, you can call the caste system in India "backwards"; people are born into their castes and there is little to no chance of being "promoted", so you are treated according to some rules and under conditions that you have no control over. Now, here in the "greatest" country in the world, have mandated that gays are not as good as straight people. WHO'S BACKWARDS NOW??
Like many people have already said, electing the first Black President of the United States was one gigantic step forward, but then the passing of Prop H8 is one gigantic step back. The rest of the world looks to the United States for inspiration and protection, but when gays can't even find protection under the law to enjoy their right to marriage just like everybody else, what kind of message is that sending??
